Invasive Marine Species

In recent years, the number of invasive lionfish in The Bahamas has drastically increased. Lionfish are a native of the Indo-Pacific Ocean. Present in The Bahamas with no natural control they are voracious predators that can quickly upset the balance of our marine environment given the chance. Lionfish have venomous spines, which means you need to be careful handling them, but the meat is safe to eat!

To report lionfish sightings, go to: www.bahamas.gov.bs. If you are stung by a lionfish, run hot water over the area (you can use the stream from your outboard engine) or use a heat pack, and then see a doctor when you return to land.
