A local volunteer organization in the Abacos of the Bahamas dedicated to the preservation of Abaco’s natural environment through education of both the community and the school systems. In July of 1988, concerned about local and visitor practices of taking undersized crawfish from the sea, a small group of Hope Town residents, namely Suzanne Bethel, Candace Key, Frank Kenyon and Rudy Malone, formed Friends of the Environment. As time went on, FRIENDS added mangrove removal restrictions to their list of concerns. When a large development on the north end of Guana Cay involving dredging and marine habitat loss threatened the area, they expanded their organization the meet this challenge too. Since 1988, FRIENDS has successfully established a network of businesses, government agencies and community residents to share information and volunteer support for environmental concerns around Abaco. Today, Friends of the Environment is actively involved in marine protected areas, the sharing knowledge and methods for the control of invasive species, Abaco’s National Park and the education of both the young and the old to preserve the beauty, heritage and environs of Abaco. | ||||||
