Bird Watching is the fastest-growing outdoor recreational activity in the world for people of all ages. It is an activity that you can keep doing for your whole life and in any part of the world. As a wild bird watcher, you will learn to identify birds and what they are doing.

In the Bahamas, the Department of Tourism is placing a high priority on bird watching as an ecotourism niche available in any areas of the Bahamas. In Abaco, you will see many varieties of birds, some that are endemic to Abaco, some that migrate here in the winters or summers, some that have made Abaco their home due to a variety of reasons, including hurricane displacement. There is great representation of Bahamian birds as well as West Indian species that many birder watchers want to see.

As a bird watcher, you will continue to learn about bird identification, important bird species, bird guiding etiquette and native flora in your area of exploration. You will learn about the environmental benefit of birds- birds control the spread of disease and seek out rich habitats of native flora to live. Birds are an excellent indicator of the environmental health of an area.

As an active bird watcher, either as an amateur or a professional, you can make a real contribution to the scientific knowledge of birds. Much of what is known today in the field of ornithology comes from observations of ordinary but dedicated bird-watchers..

Bird watching requires a minimal investment and will give you many hours of pleasure.....

  • A pair of binoculars
  • A field guide for the area
  • A hat
  • Water bottle
  • A small notebook and pen to take notes about what you see
