Environmental Education In Abaco

Environmental Education is on the move in Abaco. Friends of the Environment Education Office assists the teachers of Abaco with a variety of educational resources that is consistent with Science and Social Studies Curriculums of the Ministry of Education.

Friends have provided Abaco schools with Mangrove Kits and Pine forest kits that include print outs, posters and power point presentations.

Discovery Club- an after School Program starting January 2008

Earth Day... April 25, 2008

Teachers can now book out of the classroom field trips to the pine forest, mangroves, and artificial reef ball.

Field trips can be booked at least one week in advance by contacting the Educational Officer, d’Shan Maycock at the FRIENDS office at 367-2721.

Groups up to twenty five kids can be accommodated at one time. Handouts and materials would be provided as appropriate. During the month of April trips will be done with artificial reef balls.

Presentations

Presentations can be done Monday –Thursday.

During the month of April we will be offering coastal zone awareness presentations throughout the schools.

Other presentations can be done as needed.

FRIENDS has presentations available on the Coastal Zone, Mangroves, Pine Forest, Invasive Species and Coral Reefs.

After School Programs

Friends of the Environment Education program will be expanding to include a once weekly after school program.

This will be open to children ages 6-13.

Interested students will get involved with the latest happenings in the environment. Students will learn about various ecosystems as well as get involved in nature walks, birding, overnight camping and many interesting topics.
