Treasures of the Sea Teacher's Conference

In July of 2007, The Bahamas National Trust organized a workshop for teachers in Nassau to launch their latest resource guide, Treasures in the Sea. FRIENDS’ Education Officer d’Shan Maycock was in attendance at this workshop. This resource guide focuses on the marine environment in particular three important marine species in the Bahamas, the Nassau Grouper, the Queen Conch and the Spiny Lobster (crawfish).

At the end of this workshop participants were encouraged to return to their respective schools and also conduct in-house workshops.

FRIENDS decided to host a similar workshop in Abaco to include schools in all districts on the island.

Thanks to a grant from the Bahamas National Trust, FRIENDS was able to host The Treasures in the Sea Workshop on October 23rd & 24th at Friends of the Environment Education Center in Marsh Harbour. Teachers were invited from all Districts in Abaco to participate. The workshop was open to all grade level teachers in Abaco regardless of the discipline taught and grade level.

A total of twenty-two teachers represented 15 of the twenty-five schools in Abaco. They were able to participate in fun filled learning activities including arts & crafts, peer teaching and a field trip at Camp Abaco.

The goal of this workshop was to expose teachers at various levels and disciplines to marine education in The Bahamas. At the end of the workshop each teacher was presented with a certificate of participation and a resource guide to take back to their classrooms.

Overall comments from teachers showed that they all had a remarkable time and would like for FRIENDS to offer future workshops on various environmental topics.
